Alternative Paints

The Wolf here

I have been doing this hobby for as long as I can remember, and in all those years I have tried a few alternative paints to the Games-Workshop Citadel  paints.

The Army Painter

When I first started back in 2001 Games-Workshop did do a spay can of Shadow Grey (now The Fang) I used this product and happily bought it many times before they discontinued it. It was a great product to work with and I was gutted just like many other hobbyists. They had a range of spays perfect for most armies.

After the Shadow Grey spray can was gone I looked of an alternative. I had tried painting with the small pot and a brush but it took far too long. My search took me to Halfords. At Halfords there are hundreds of spray cans for touching up cars. I found a paint that was pretty close to Shadow Grey and sprayed away, the only trouble is the paint is very glossy and looked a bit odd when touching up the odd mistake.

In 2009 the Space Wolves received a  new codex and an awesome collection of new models. I took it upon myself to find other alternative paint for my new Space Wolves. My search took me to B&Q I found spray paint that looked like an exact match, however when I had sprayed my models I realised it wasn't such a good match as i had bought it whilst wearing my sunglasses! I didn't make that mistake again.

With my mistake made I decided to try airbrushing with some new models. There is an art to it and takes a bit of getting used to however the finished result is brilliant. As long as you have the right mix of paint and water your models turn out amazing. If you keep your airbrush equipment clean it will last a life time.

Space Wolves had a second wave of releases in 2012. unfortunately my airbrush jar had got smashed so had to revert to painting by hand.

Recently I have come across The Army Painter range. The range has a wide range of products from paints to basing materials. Many of their paints match up to the Games-Workshop paints system and they have more of a spray paint selection than Games-Workshop too. The paint system is a very easy and quick one to use and is highly recommended.    http://www.thearmypainter.com/

With the latest Space Marine release Games-Workshop released 4 new spray paint cans for the four most popular Space Marine armies. I have not used them yet but I imagine they are just like the cans i used many years ago. Games-Workshop must have realised they had made a mistake with many hobbyists searching for new paints.New Games-workshop spray paint

Since using Halfords spay paint and other spray paint that didn't work out on my Space wolves I have found out that I can strip these models down and repaint them saving them from the bin. I shall tell you how very soon!
